October 2009

Reagan went to her gymnastics class, which was also having a Halloween costume party…she went as a princess.

None of use knew it before hand, but as the class was concluding they announce Reagan had won “Gymnastics Student of the Month”!

She was very happy and they said that she was chosen not only because of her hard work, but also because she set a good example of other students by listening and staying on track.

Maysen had fun watching her sister.

I had the opportunity for some training in Socorro New Mexico last week, with friend Ken Davis. I hadn’t been there since I was a child and jumped at the chance. The photo below is the view I had from our car, right outside of Socorro, NM. (If you click any of the photos, it will take you to the full set)

The instructors at our class told us there were many sights to see in New Mexico. One we selected was the VLA (Very Large Array). You will immediately recognize this as being in several movies, but ITS REAL.

You really can’t imagine the size of these without being there. Here’s a photo of Ken, for comparison.

We were luck enough to get there just before sunset.

Although the training was very intensive and took up most of my time, we did mange to explore the area a little. I noticed a cemetery right off the highway and shot a few photos. The cemeteries here are quite a bit different than the ones in Kansas. Maybe it’s just the lack of grass and trees, or maybe it was the lizards and snakes that were around.

One of the guys we met in our class was talking with a NM Fish & Game Officer, who gave him directions to a lost canyon. It was a long hard drive, off-road, and we couldn’t travel more than 15 mph as it was very rough terrain. We were wondering if we’d been sent on a wide goose chase when we located our target…it was better than we could have imagined.

If you look at the photo below, you can see the friend that got the directions…it will give you a little idea of how large our scenery was.

Here’s another photo, with Ken.

I’m currently on a business trip in Socorro, New Mexico. The mountains and scenery is beautiful. I plan on taking a lot of photos and will post some of them to my flickr account. Here are a few of the New Mexico Skies.
